Within Drama at CSG, available in Y9, at GCSE and A Level, we actively strive for our students to become practitioners themselves: able to create rather than rely on the ideas of others.
To facilitate this, we draw on a wide range of theatre and texts at all levels of the curriculum. Experiencing as many theatre shows as we can, the mix of modern and classical plays encourages this greater agency and creativity.
In addition to this, at KS5, there is a greater emphasis on analysis and evaluation skills, and the construction of theatre through devising.
Alongside the many theatre trips we run for all year groups, all of our students can also get involved in our summer musical, which happens each year. Recent productions include ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘Legally Blonde’ and ‘Fiddler on the Roof’. Students are involved in every aspect of these productions, with students being largely responsible for the costume, stage management, design and music of all of these large ensemble pieces. The emphasis here is on students taking ownership of their roles and understanding how their contributions are all essential in ensuring the success of these productions.
We take advantage of the plethora of opportunities available to us within London and work closely with theatres to give our students access to inspiring experiences to enrich their study of drama and knowledge of careers in the arts. We have worked with the Old Vic Schools Club over the past few years, which has enabled groups of Year 10 students to see 4 free productions at the Old Vic, most recently ‘A Christmas Carol’, ‘Arcadia’ and ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’. Alongside this, students also participate in workshops run by the Old Vic about different elements of backstage theatre, related to the shows they have seen. The workshops could be focused on sound, costume, stage management, directing and lighting, ensuring students know the range of careers open to them beyond performing.
In addition, we work closely with the Donmar Warehouse, enabling us to diversify the range of shows we take our students to. Their outreach programme offers the opportunity to take part in workshops alongside seeing their shows for free. Recent productions include ‘Mass’, ‘The Maids’ and ‘Juniper Blood’ and frequent post-show Q&A’s with the cast and creatives inspire students about the possibilities of careers in theatre. The Donmar also runs a Schools Tour every year of a show specifically tailored to KS3, which our younger students have enjoyed in the past few years.
At KS5, we offer a weekly Drama Enrichment where students can get involved in all aspects of the theatre, from acting and choreography to stage management, costume and tech. We also continue to run theatre trips which all of our sixth form students can be a part of, most recently to see ‘Inter Alia’.
