Unique within the maintained sector, CSG offers Latin, Classical Greek and Classical Civilisation to all students at all key stages. Taught with expertise and passion, the aim of each subject is to develop literary, historical and linguistic skills, allowing every student to discover an aspect of the ancient world which reflects their individuality. By engaging with a breadth of stimulating original source material from the ancient world, learners develop their linguistic, visual, textual historical and cultural literacy, leading them to appreciate, analyse and find new meaning in the modern world around them.

Enrichment opportunities
KS3:
- Classics Club takes place each week, open to all students in years 7-8, with exciting sessions on an array of Classical themes, often led by KS4 and KS5 students.
- Activities we have recently enjoyed have included: Medusa-themed cookie decoration; Roman Emperor Balloon Debates; Make-Your-Own Roman Curse Tablet; the Trial of Medea and Black-Figure Greek Vase design – the more creative, the better!
- Y8 and Y9 Greek Club introduces the culture of the ancient Greeks, as well as the alphabet and foundational Classical Greek vocabulary, preparing students to embark upon GCSE in Y10.
- To supplement our KS3 curriculum, all groups engage with a visit from a professional storyteller, who brings to life the oral culture of the ancient world and supports students in developing their own oral communication skills through the medium of mythology.
- At the end of Summer term we invite students to take part in a Roman board games workshop and a Roman London Walking Tour, to explore the ancient roots of our own city. Visits to the British Museum, Roman Amphitheatre, the Museum of London and the National Gallery have supplemented our curriculum and provided great opportunities for students to meet Classics ‘in the wild’.
KS4:
- Each year our GCSE students visit the British Museum to study the artefacts prescribed in and related to their courses, up-close.
- Students with a passion for the ancient world at KS4 are encouraged to run sessions for Classics Club, sharing their expertise and interests with younger students.
- Classical Greek GCSE exists as an extra-curricular activity, available for all students to study alongside their daily timetable, leading up to an Intermediate Certificate at the end of year one, and a full GCSE qualification in two years.
- KS4 students are invited to join our biennial residential trip to Greece or Rome,
- We run several outings each year to theatrical productions, lectures and study days held across London.
KS5:
- All students at Camden’s sixth form are invited to study Classical Greek from scratch in after school lessons, twice a week, leading to an Intermediate Certificate at the end of year one, and the OCR Classical Greek GCSE qualification in two years.
- A residential trip to either Greece or Rome takes place biennially
- We run several outings a year to theatrical productions, lectures and study days held across London.
- Classical speakers form a strong component of the CSG Masterclass series, both adding depth to the curriculum and breadth beyond it. Opportunities abound to lead sessions for younger students at our weekly Classics Club.
