Year 9 Guys and Dolls

On Thursday 17 October 2024, the English department took us and 38 other students to see a production of the American musical 'Guys and Dolls'. We took the tube to the Bridge theatre in central London and arrived in time for the matinée.

During the play, the stages would move up and down, creating a very interactive experience. We were constantly asked to move around to create space for the moving stages and actors. Although this did sometimes interrupt our experience (and our legs were hurting so badly from standing up!) it made this performance more unique and exciting, and we would jump at the opportunity to go again. Our favourite part was the brilliant performance of the song 'Sit down, you're rockin' the boat!'

Year 12 Art: Borough Market Drawing Trip

On Thursday 17 October we took out all the year 12 art students for a day of location drawing in and around Borough Market. The task was to complete a series of drawings and studies from first-hand observation, as a response to the theme of ‘Place’.

We were lucky with the weather and everyone rose to the challenge of sketching and drawing in a busy and bustling spot.

Geography Alumni

This week, we’re thrilled to share some exciting news from one of our former students, Agnes Jones, who was in our A-Level Geography class from 2020 to 2022. Agnes has recently made her mark in the world of geography by contributing to the prestigious 'Study Geography' edition of The Geographical Magazine.

We love hearing about our past students' successes. We’re incredibly proud of her and look forward to seeing where her studies and interests take her next.  Some of you might go and have a look at the geographical magazines in the library,  sparking curiosity and encouraging further exploration of geography, and maybe we will be writing about you in years to come.

Parent Governor Election

There are 2 vacancies coming up on the school governing body for parent governors. The governing body is made up of 18 governors including foundation, staff and parent governors. There are four parent governors in total.

There is 1 evening meeting (5:30-7:30pm) every term and every governor is to join one of the 2 standing committees that meet from 8 -
9am virtually via Google Meet, once (occasionally twice) a term in advance of the governors' meetings. Papers are circulated a week in advance. Governors are consulted occasionally by email if anything urgent arises. Governors are also linked with subject and policy areas and are expected to make an annual link visit to their allocated department and to get involved in policy updates in their areas. This might involve reviewing existing policies, new developments and discussing with senior staff any key issues arising and contributing to governors' meetings on these 'link' areas. All new governors are also expected to attend induction training and any other training as necessary.

The atmosphere at meetings is informal and collegiate; we are all totally committed to the ongoing success of the school and fulfilling our role as 'critical friend'. Governing bodies have three core functions:

● Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
● Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils and
● Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

Parent governors are elected by the parents of children registered at the school for a four-year term of office. Almost all parents are entitled to stand and vote, but there are some restrictions. Please check here if you are eligible

If you would like to know more about the role of parent governor, please contact me, the Clerk to the Governors, at the school. My email address is
dcutler@csg.school , I work on Mondays and Wednesdays.

If you would like to serve as a parent governor yourself, or would like to nominate another person as a parent governor, please complete the nomination form attached. Please note that all nomination forms must be signed by the nominee, their proposer and seconder.

  • Parent Governor Nomination Form
  • Letter seeking nomination for 2 Parent Governors

Nomination forms, together with personal statements, are to be returned to the school by midday on Wednesday 27th November 2024 either by post addressed to D Cutler, or by email.

If more than two nominations are received, there will be an election.

Assembly Speaker - 21 October
Lara Philippart, Community Fundraising and Engagement Officer for the Royal Free Charity

Camden Sixth Form says thanks to its most recent assembly speaker, Community Fundraising and Engagement Officer for the Royal Free Charity, Lara Philippart.

After studying sports science and public health at university, Lara Philippart spent a lot of time working independently at home and, over the course of several years, gravitated towards a job that could have her interacting with more people, to visibly and rapidly make a difference in other people’s lives. In comes the Royal Free Charity.

The Royal Free Charity is a charity organisation that works closely (through hundreds of volunteers) to raise money and support three main hospitals: Royal Free Hospital (in Hampstead), Barnet, and Chase Farm. On average, they support 1.6 million patients per year, and are “always looking for volunteers” as “there are a million ways you can get involved”. Support is especially important for their fundraising events, which include the London Marathon, London to Brighton cycles, and afternoon teas. Lara explained that the charity’s campaign to increase engagement was called the ‘Hands Up’ Appeal, which broke down the three main ways of getting involved: Handmake (e.g. bake sale or making jewellery to sell), Hand in (e.g. sweepstake or birthday donations), and Hands on (e.g. sponsored head shave or set a 30-day challenge). If interested in taking part, you can sign up to volunteer from the age of 16.

As a fundraising officer, Lara helps organise numerous fundraising events, and she helps to raise awareness about the Royal Free Charity’s mission through programmes such as school outreach (like her assembly with us). Lara is based close to the Royal Free Hospital, where the main office of the charity is, and spends a lot of time in the hospital itself interacting with patients. In particular, when it comes to therapy dogs: “All the staff light up when the dogs come in… literally my favourite part of the day!”  I think that’s a sentiment most of us can agree with.

The Royal Free Charity, Lara shared, attempts to bridge the gap between hospitals and researchers with their two key priorities:

  1. Providing transformational services for patients and staff.  This involves trying to raise money for volunteer services, complementary therapy, and a support hub (care services).
  2. Committing critical investment in cancer care. A recent example of this is raising money for the Da Vinci surgical robot.

Our guest was engaging and informative the whole way through, provoking a laugh here and there. Most memorably, she was asked about her favourite part of her job, and immediately we got “dogs–the therapy dogs,” before laughing it off herself and adding, “No, making a difference. Because it’s a difference that you can see for yourself. And that’s the best feeling in the world.”

It is also a good reminder that we can all take from Lara: helping others doesn’t just improve someone else’s day, but it improves our own.

The Camden School for Girls Sixth Form is incredibly grateful for Lara Philippart’s time!

Sixth Form Senior Prefect
