    Handling Low Mood and Depression

    We all have probably experienced having a low mood and perhaps being depressed too but depression can become so extreme it may also become your ‘killer.’ A general low mood can include, sadness, feeling anxious or panicky, tiredness, low self-esteem, frustration etc. But a low mood will tend to lift after a few days or weeks. On the other hand, a low mood that doesn’t go away and may start attacking you is a sign of depression. Depression can get worse and lead to a low mood lasting two weeks or more. Not getting any enjoyment out of life, feeling hopeless, feeling tired or lacking energy, loss of appetite etc are all common symptoms.

    Depression is a common but serious disease that ranges widely in severity. If you have a milder case, you may struggle with symptoms that include sadness, irritability, anger and fatigue that lasts for weeks or longer. Such depression interferes with your daily life and relationships. But some cases of depression are more severe, with intense symptoms that may include significant appetite and weight loss, sleep problems, and frequent thoughts of death or suicide. Such depression can be paralyzing. You may isolate yourself and have trouble getting out of bed or leaving the house. However, there are tips you can use to reduce your symptoms and fight back yourself.

     

    Try improving your routine and helping yourself

    Whether you have depression or just find yourself feeling down for a while, it could be worth trying some self-help techniques. For example:

    • Getting a regular good night's sleep. You should have sleep routine of 8-11 hours, remember sleep is the key to not just your physical health but your mental health too.
    • Keeping to a healthy diet, reducing your alcohol intake and getting regular exercise, can help you feel more in control and able to cope. Nutrition is very important, and you’ll definitely start to see changes when eating the correct nutrients.

    Other self-help techniques can include activities such as meditation, breathing exercises and learning ways to think about problems differently.

    There are many stereotypes of depression, including: ‘you’re just being lazy’ in fact we give ourselves these stereotypes that if we don’t complete our tasks, we say “I am lazy.” Suffering from depression can lead to overworking or labelling ourselves as a “failure.” But this isn’t true, we need to give ourselves a break. Anyone who suffers with a mental illness is completely valid and no one should be defined by what society thinks of them.

     

    Talk, Communicate and Share

    One of the largest cures for all types of mental health illnesses including depression is talking and sharing about what you're going through, although this can be quite difficult. Nevertheless, there are lots of different types of talking therapies available. To help you decide which one would most suit you, talk to your GP, parents, teachers, friends or read about the different types of talking therapies, there will definitely be someone for you.

     

    Face your fears

    Feeling low or anxious can often avoid you from talking to people. Some people may also lose their confidence in going out or travelling. It may be extremely difficult to tackle your fears but once you do these situations will eventually become easier. If not, try taking someone close along with you, often talking to someone while trying to accomplish your activities can keep your distracted.

    Finally, never ever forget the power of words, communicate even when it’s uncomfortable or uneasy, one of the best ways to heal is simply getting everything out.
