    Cambridge Union Schools Debating Central London Round

    On Saturday 2 February, Mr Gunn accompanied six Year 12 students (Bluebelle, Max, Martha, Milena, Maqsuud and Elizabeth) to Clapton Girls School in Hackney to take part in the Central London round of the Cambridge Union Schools debating competition.

    Over the course of the day, the three teams from CSG took part in four debates against some of the top schools debaters in London.

    The motions were as follows;

    • This house would abolish all medical drug patents
    • This house would legalise all drugs
    • This house would pay housewives/husbands a living wage
    • This house would give two votes to people under the age of 30

    Our students gave a very good account of themselves and did incredibly well debating for and against these complex topics. All were commended by the judges for their excellent engagement with the key arguments.

    Only five of the 44 teams taking part progressed through to finals day in Cambridge and unfortunately none of the three teams from CSG were selected - although it was very close - one team was only one point away from progressing. All in all, it was an extremely worthwhile experience for our debaters to compete in such high standard competition.
