This week: Mental Health Awareness Day, Skern, Year 7 Disco.

Mental Health Awareness Day 10 October

World Mental Health Day, led by the World Federation of Mental Health, is on 10 October each year. To help mark the occasion, our Head Girl Team is raising awareness of what can be done to support people with mental health problems.

    The problem

One in four adults and one in ten children are likely to have a mental health problem in any given year. This can have a profound impact on the lives of tens of millions of people in the UK, and can affect their ability to sustain relationships, work, or just get through the day.

The Head Girl Team raised money selling yellow ribbons at break collecting £20.85 in a very short space of time! Each week they run Have a chat and a Kitkat at lunchtime for anyone who might be in need of help and reassurance. And the SOS team is on hand at all times to offer solutions and a listening ear to anyone feeling worried or upset.

The school has a Mental Health Policy, drafted with colleagues from Camden LA and other Camden schools.

    Skern

Our new Year 12 have enjoyed three days of outdoor activities, team-building and relaxation at Skern Lodge outdoor pursuits centre in Appledore, Devon. Activities included climbing, surfing, abseiling, rafting, swimming and, of course, socialising!  Students worked closely with the Skern Lodge instructors and the sixth form tutors on a whole range of team and individual challenges. The food was, as ever, delicious and plentiful and the weather was kind after a wet first afternoon. The Skern staff were very complimentary about the particularly positive attitude of all the students.

    Year 7 Disco

Our energetic Parent Teacher Organisation, CASCA, welcomed all Year 7 parents and their daughters to our Year 7 disco on 28 September. This was another opportunity for parents to meet their daughter’s form tutor and Head of Year, and also to meet several parents who run their excellent annual programme of events in the school. We hope that many Year 7 parents will join the groups who run these, or will help with running bars or stalls for evening or weekend events.

Needless to say, we’d also like parents in all other year groups to come along and get involved!

It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, with great music, some wonderful outfits and a fabulous atmosphere among both students and parents.

Many thanks to CASCA for running the disco, to the Head Girl Team for getting the dancing going and to all parents who came along to make themselves feel very at home in Camden School for Girls.
